We went ice skating here after seeing an advert on Facebook. It is a great set up and there was refreshments available for myself and the hubby. The kids had a ball, I would definitely be going again this year. 5 Stars.

The Origin of Ice Skating

Ice skating has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. Its origins can be traced to several regions, primarily in Europe and Asia. Here are some key points about the origins of ice skating:

  • Ancient Beginnings: The earliest evidence of ice skating dates back to around 3000 BC in Finland, where skates made from animal bones were found. These early skates were attached to the feet and used for gliding over ice.

  • The Netherlands: By the 12th century, ice skating had developed further in the Netherlands, where it became a popular form of transportation during winter. The Dutch also developed the first skates with metal blades, which allowed for better gliding and maneuverability.

  • Scotland and England: In the 17th century, ice skating gained popularity in Scotland and England. The first recorded ice skating club was established in Edinburgh in 1742, and ice skating became a fashionable pastime among the upper classes.

  • Figure Skating and Speed Skating: Ice skating eventually branched into different styles. Figure skating began in the 18th century, with the first known figure skating competitions held in the 19th century. Speed skating also emerged around this time, particularly in the Netherlands, where it became a competitive sport.

Overall, ice skating has evolved significantly over the centuries, influenced by various cultures and technological advancements, leading to the diverse forms of skating we see today, including recreational, artistic, and competitive styles.
